Overlanding

What is Overlanding?

A much disputed term, overlanding basically means to travel a long distance overland. However it is used to cover a whole genre of adventurous travel from solo round the world cyclists to whole families in big 6 wheeler 18 tonne trucks.

How did you get into Overlanding?

We have been motorhoming across UK and Europe, enjoying the main tourist sites, cities and also the fabulous landscapes and natural features. This felt like the right place to start and we got to see a number of places like Barcelona, Porto, Lisbon, Pompeii, Venice which we had not seen before. However, we have been reading blogs and watching vlogs to inspire our future adventures and those that really caught our imagination where those people going out there to overland around the world. So, we visited some overland shows – Abenteuer Allrad (Germany) and Adventure Overland (UK), did a Unimog driving course and spent 10 days in Iceland on a guided Overland trip in a Bliss Mobile overland truck. We were convinced then that we wanted to go Overlanding ourselves, but it took us sometime longer to find the right overland truck for us.

So what is the plan?

We have have now chosen our overland truck – a Krug Expedition Project Rhino. We take delivery next week and will spend the summer getting it fitted out for our first trip. We then have tickets for the Rugby World Cup in France in September / October 2023, before we then set off on our first overlanding trip to Morocco hopefully in November 2023. We then have some ambitious plans to travel the length of the Pan-American highway, travel the length of Eastern Europe and maybe even drive back to Europe from South Africa. However, as much as we are preparing ourselves and our truck for the long term, there is a lot of steps on the way and plans can and will change along the way!
